Reset ESXi evaluation license

First and foremost, never do this to avoid properly licensing your ESXi hosts in a production environment. This post is intended for educational purposes only for non-production environments including, but not limited to, labs and training environments.

You can download a quick little script I have created to run on the host here. To run the script:

  • Unzip the folder to extract the shell file
  • Copy the file to the ESXi server (SCP or use vSphere client)
  • Ensure the file is executable with this command:
    • chmod 777 eval-license-reset.sh
  • Execute the script like this:
    • ./eval-license-reset.sh

If you want to do this yourself, here is the one liner for you to paste directly into command line when you SSH into the ESXi host:

rm -r /etc/vmware/license.cfg && cp /etc/vmware/.#license.cfg /etc/vmware/license.cfg && /etc/init.d/vpxa restart
